Restoration and Conservation Workshops

Leather/metal restoration and conservation laboratory has an area of 15.3 square meters. The lab accommodates two thirty-minute fire-rated safety cabinets to ensure safe storage of flammable chemicals, two giraf-exhausters for metal powders and solvent vapors, water distillation equipment, an ultrasonic tank, a ph meter, a salt meter and thermometer, a digital microscope and a water bath.

 

In the conservation lab, documentation is always the first step in developing a treatment plan for the objects. After documentation, common treatments for objects include mechanical and chemical cleaning, replacement of the missing parts, retouching and consolidation. After being stable enough with treatments, objects are stored or exhibited.

 

Paper restoration and conservation laboratory has totally 106,3 square meters area, including 15,3 square meters storage and 91 square meters workplace. The equipment in the lab includes a low-pressure heating table, a light box table, a fiber optic sheet light pad, a drafting table, a binding press, a drying rack, a tacking iron, a washing tank, a cold steam generator and precision scales.    

 

After documentation of the paper objects in the lab, a treatment plan is developed. These treatments include damp or dry cleaning, washing, humidifying, repairing tears, replacement of the missing parts and consolidation. After being stable enough with treatments, objects are stored or exhibited.
